The microbiome is the composition of microorganisms that develop in and on the body from birth. Examples of these microorganisms include bacteria and viruses. The microbiome plays a crucial role in whether we stay healthy or become ill.
Within the AIMS study, we investigate the influence of the microbiome on the health of children. To what extent is there a connection between the microbiome and lifestyle diseases such as diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular diseases, and oral health problems?
Together with Amsterdam families, we want to gain more insight into the microbiome. Goal: contribute to the treatment and prevention of specific health issues in Amsterdam children. Once we have concrete research results, you can find them on this website.
AIMS is the world’s first study mapping the microbiome development of such a large group of young children over 3 years. During the research process, the entire family can (partially) participate in AIMS! Collecting samples from different family members provides valuable input on their influence on the microbiome development of the youngest child.
